If you haven’t experienced it you’ve definitely seen it, the infamous weave pat. There’s nothing more annoying than that itch that you can’t get to or just won’t go away. Women who wear sew in extensions often experience an annoying itch in their scalp. This leads them to patting and sometimes even pounding their head with their hand. All the patting in the world won’t make it go away. So you ask WHY??? Why does this happen? There are multiple reasons for this.
DANDRUFF
Dandruff is the most common reason for this itch frenzy. This condition is caused by the overgrowth of yeast on the scalp, which causes inflammation at the root resulting in itching and flaking. To reduce dandruff use an anti-dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders.
SWEAT
Sweating is something we all deal with whether it is from an intense workout or a long hot summer day. When you incorporate that sweat with lack of moisture and fresh air it leads to an unbearable itching sensation. To avoid this remember to towel dry your hair after workouts and make sure you moisturize your scalp once a week.
FOUNDATION
Another cause for the “Pat” can be attributed to the braids at the foundation of your weave. Tight braids cause pulling and pulling causes inflammation of the hair follicles. Having a secure foundation is important but you never want to jeopardize the integrity of your natural hair. Another way to avoid the weave pat is to switch from sew in hair extensions to clip in hair extensions or hair pieces. Clipping in your extensions is a way to achieve fullness or length and it can be removed on a daily basis so that you can let your scalp breathe and take care of your natural hair.
